Mental Health Awareness Month

As we go along with our days, we hardly ever stop to think about those who have to live their lives with a mental illness. May is Mental Health Awareness Month. This is the chance to educate yourselves on mental illnesses and provide support for those who have it.

What is a mental illness?

A mental illness is a condition that can affect people’s behavior, thinking or mood.

What are some of the conditions that people are dealing with?

There are many different kinds of conditions that people may have. A few of the more common conditions include autism, anxiety disorder and depression. These affect people in many different ways and cause a variety of symptoms.

Why is it important to learn about these mental illnesses?

People with these conditions lack support from their peers. They also are more at risk of being bullied by others because of the lack of understanding people have of these illnesses. It is important to educate yourself so you are able to understand what they are going through.

What are some ways for people to get help?

People should definitely talk to a doctor that will be able to diagnose them and provide them with help. It is also important to find someone who will support and listen to them. Also, Spirit of Giving provides resources and links to free or low-cost counseling services in the area. Click here.

Despite the fact that it is Mental Health Awareness Month, everyone should take the time to learn more about mental disorders throughout the year. Check out our resources for ways you can contribute to the cause. You can be the one to help.
