Description: A hidden and at-risk to graduate population are youth caregivers. They are the more than 1.3 million children between the ages of 8-18 years (Young Caregivers in the US, 2005) who sacrifice their education, health, well-being and childhood to provide care for family members who are ill, injured, elderly or disabled. The Silent Epidemic (2006) documented that among young adults who dropped out of school, 22% did so to care for a family member. Responding to the psycho-social, developmental and academic challenges caregiving youth face, the Caregiving Youth Project (CYP) partners with schools and collaborating organizations to provide professional services in and out of school, and at home to strengthen student-caregivers and their families. Currently the CYP is offered in 26 middle and high schools in Palm Beach County, FL. A rolling enrollment is dependent upon the student’s Level of Responsibility and parental consent. Youth caregivers remain in the CYP for an average of 5.46 years. The CYP also provides mentoring for youth in preparation for graduation, post-secondary education and next steps to achieve future goals. High school graduation rates of active participants exceeds 98%.
